Before joining our waitlist and paying the deposit, we encourage you to think about the long-term financial and time commitment required to home a Cobberdog. This includes training, grooming, nutrition and health care. Cobberdogs love humans so it is important that their owners are present with their dog for much of the week.

We will keep customers on our waitlist and mailing list up-to-date regarding upcoming litters. We expect next litters in November or December 2023.  Please understand that breeding is subject to many conditions outside of our control, including heat cycles and variation in numbers, sexes and colours of puppies.

What's behind the cost of an Australian Cobberdog?

We invest heavily in our dogs and our breeding program to ensure that the puppies we provide to our customers are of the best health and temperament. We are seeking to build our breeding program into a sustainable business so that we can continue to do this well into the future. We don’t want to be in a position where we need to cut corners to make ends meet. We recognise our customers are looking for the best companion, suited to their needs.

Listed below are just some of the costs associated with our breeding program.

  • Ongoing vet checks and health care
  • Maternity related vet care
  • DNA and other health testing (eg. hip and elbow scoring)
  • Stud service fees
  • Whelping supplies
  • Puppy vet checks and health related expenses (eg. vaccination, worming, tick and flea treatments)
  • Cleaning, consumables and resources associated with whelping (eg. birthing accessories, cleaning, heating)
  • 24/7 care of litters in early weeks of life and full time care, socialisation and assessment until puppies leave us
  • This includes hiring casual staff to assist, especially when we have multiple litters
  • Time and equipment for dog care, grooming, training, socialisation, promotion of the breed, and training and education around breeding practices and legislation
  • Regular costs of high quality natural food for breeding dogs
  • Additional cost of food for whelping mothers and puppies
  • Property costs including construction and maintenance
  • Ensuring standards are met relating to legislative requirements of the Animal Welfare Code of Practice for Breeding Dogs and Cats, and the requirements of the Master Dog Breeders and Associates.

It takes a significant investment to bring a prospective breeding dog from birth to whelping her first litter. Sometimes we need to face up to the tough decision to retire a dog from our breeding program if their physical qualities or temperament are not up to our high standards, even some who have not yet had a litter at all. We give dogs ample rest time between litters, with our dogs typically having zero or one litter per year. Even when litters are born, there are no guarantees, for example a litter could be 2 puppies or 10!

We hope this is helpful for you consideration and your purchasing decisions!
