    About Us

    Focusing on Health and Temperament

At Cobbers for Life we prioritise the health and temperament of our Cobberdogs.  Our breeding dogs complete vet checks and full DNA profiling to ensure that they pass on only the healthiest genes to their offspring. We also obtain test results for any stud dogs we use in our program.  Since Cobberdogs are bred for therapy and assistance work, we prioritise the behavioural characteristics of our dogs.  When assessing puppies for inclusion into our breeding program, we base our decision on a combination of test results and temperament.  We also consider coat type - straight and wavy coats only, without the improper coat gene - in line with the Australian Cobberdog breed standard. Coat-type is verified by DNA testing. The Australian Cobberdog breed standard was developed by the Master Dog Breeders Association, which is overseeing the development of the breed. The breed standard outlines the physical and behavioural characteristics of the Australian Cobberdog. We assess the compliance of our dogs to this standard when making decisions about our breeding program. This is one way in which the Cobberdog, as a pedigree (breed in development), differs from hybrid/mix breeds such as "oodles". We regularly collaborate with other breeders to ensure the Cobberdog vision is being realised through our work.
